How it works

Five ways to use an isolated drum track

I have spent 20 years making records and a decade teaching audio, and these are the jobs a soloed drum stem does best.

• Transcribing grooves. With the band gone, ghost notes on the snare and the exact hi-hat pattern stop hiding under guitars and vocals. Loop two bars and write what you hear.
• Learning fills. Set a loop around the fill and let it repeat until the sticking is clear. With Pro you can slow the section down without changing the pitch, add a count-in and name each loop so you can jump between fills.
• Sampling breaks. Audition a break in solo, check the tail of each hit, then download the stem and chop it in your DAW. Clear the rights before you release anything built on it.

• Referencing kick and snare sounds. When I mix, I often want to know how a favourite record balances the kick against the snare. Solo the drum stem at a sensible level and you can hear the tuning, the length of the snare and how much room sound sits on the kit.

What separates cleanly, and what does not

Drums are one of the strongest stems in AI separation. Hits are short and sharp, so they are easy to tell apart from sustained notes. Knowing where the edges are saves you time.

• Acoustic kits separate best. A live kit in a room, recorded for rock, funk, soul or jazz, comes out as a tight, natural stem with the room sound intact.
• Programmed drums are usually clean. Tight electronic patterns separate well. Heavily processed drums are harder: a distorted drum bus, heavy sidechain pumping or a kick that sits on top of a sub bass shares space with the bass part, so some of it can move between stems.
• Cymbal wash is the hardest part. Crashes and rides share high frequencies with vocal breaths and distorted guitars, so a small amount of wash can stay in the other stems on dense rock mixes.
• Percussion goes with the kit. Shakers, tambourine, congas and claps land in the drum stem, which is what you want for grooves and play-alongs.
• Reverb follows the drums. Room ambience and short reverb travel with the kit. Long plate or hall tails on a snare can blur slightly into other stems on very wet productions.
