About StemConsole

StemConsole is a browser-based stem splitter and practice room. It is built and run by one person: Dan Murtagh, a mixing engineer and audio educator in Melbourne, Australia.

Who builds it

I have spent 20 years making records, recording, mixing and mastering everything from heavy rock to indie to electronic music, and a decade teaching people how to do it. My work and my free audio tools for students live at .

Mixing has never been about making things loud or polished. It is about finding what makes a song work and pushing that forward. The same goes for learning music: you get better fastest when you can hear exactly what each part is doing.

Why StemConsole exists

My students kept splitting songs into stems, getting a zip of files back, and then needing a DAW just to hear the guitar part on its own. The separation was the easy bit. Listening, looping and practising with the result was the hard bit.

So StemConsole opens the split in a live mixer instead of a download folder. You solo, mute and balance each part in the browser, loop the bar you are stuck on, and bounce your own mix. It started as a practice tool for my classes and grew from there.

What it does

I try to be straight about what StemConsole is not good at. Separation of dense mixes leaves artefacts with every tool, and the Moises alternatives guide says plainly where other tools are the better pick.

How your audio is handled

Songs are processed on dedicated GPU servers to separate the stems, and your audio is not used to train models. The details are in the privacy policy.
