Why the bass is hard to hear, and how to fix it

In a decade of teaching I have watched plenty of students swear a song has no bass part, because they were listening on a laptop. Phone and laptop speakers cannot reproduce most of the bass range. You hear the upper harmonics of each note and the pick or finger attack, and the fundamental that tells you the actual pitch is mostly missing.

• Use headphones. Even inexpensive closed-back headphones reproduce the low end far better than built-in speakers.
• Solo the bass stem. With the kick, guitars and keys gone, the notes stop hiding behind everything else in the same range.
• Blend the drums back in. Once you know the notes, bring the drum channel up under the bass. Rhythm is half of any bassline, and the kick pattern tells you where the bass player is locking in.

Learning a bassline by ear with the bass stem

Solo the bass and loop the phrase you are working on: every ghost note and slide laid bare. Basic looping is free. With Pro you can slow the song down without changing the pitch, so a fast sixteenth-note run stays in the right key while you work it out, then add named loops for each section, a count-in and tap tempo.

My routine with students: loop two bars, sing the line, find the first note, then the shape. Speed it back up in stages until you can play along with the full mix. Full method: transcribe a bass line and learn any bassline by ear.

Electric bass, synth bass and 808s

• Electric and upright bass separate very well. The stem keeps finger noise, slides and the natural decay of each note.
• Synth bass also lands in the bass stem. Very bright, distorted synth bass with lots of upper harmonics can share a little of its top end with the other stem.
• 808s sit between drums and bass. A long, tuned 808 that plays the bassline usually goes to the bass stem, while a short, punchy 808 kick goes to drums. Solo both channels to hear where yours landed.
• Kick and bass overlap. On many modern mixes the kick and bass share the same low frequencies by design. A little kick attack can sit in the bass stem, and the cleanest check is to solo bass and listen for thumps between the notes.

Which split do I need?
