The alternatives, one by one
1. Ultimate Vocal Remover: MVSEP’s kind of models on your own machine
UVR is free, open-source desktop software for Windows, macOS and Linux that runs open separation models, including Demucs, MDX-Net and MDX23C, locally with no upload limits. You can combine models in an ensemble, as MVSEP Premium does. The cost is setup and hardware: you install it, choose models, and wait for renders; a capable GPU makes a big difference.

2. StemConsole: choose how far apart, then hear it in a mixer
StemConsole is the tool I built. Instead of choosing a model, you choose how far apart you want the song, and it runs the model we picked for that job. Every split opens in a live mixer in the browser, on a computer or a phone.
How it works: upload a song, pick Vocal Remover (2 stems), Basic Split (4 stems: vocals, drums, bass, other) or Full Separation (6 stems, adding guitar and piano), and the stems open in a live mixer. Solo, mute and balance them, loop a section, and bounce your own mix before downloading anything. Free covers Vocal Remover and Basic Split, 5 splits a month, MP3 stems and mix bounces, with no watermark and no install. Full Separation is a US$1.99 credit for one song, or Pro at US$6.99 a month or US$49 a year, which also adds WAV, 100 splits a month and the practice tools.
Where others win: no YouTube link import, no chord detection, no native phone app, and the slowest speed is 50%. Uploads are MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A, AAC or WMA up to 200 MB.
3. X-Minus Pro: a vocal remover with many stem types
X-Minus Pro is an online vocal remover and stem splitter alongside a large karaoke library. It separates lead and backing vocals, male and female vocals, drum parts such as kick and snare, bass, guitar, piano, strings and wind. Free output is limited to one minute of each track and 15 minutes of audio a day; the Premium price is not published on the site.

4. LALAL.AI: many stem types, bought by the minute
LALAL.AI splits one stem type per pass, including electric and acoustic guitar, piano, synth, strings and wind, on the web, desktop, iOS and Android. 5. Moises: stems with practice tools on your phone
Moises runs on the web, desktop, iPhone and Android, with a mixer, many separation targets on paid plans, and practice tools: chords, speed, pitch, loops and a metronome. The free plan splits into 2 or 4 stems, 5 uploads a month on files up to 5 minutes. See the best Moises alternatives.

6. AudioShake Studio: a professional separator for individuals
AudioShake’s browser-based Studio is open to individuals, alongside its API. It separates vocals, drums, bass, guitar and keys, as well as dialogue, music and effects for video. The free plan has 200 credits with MP3 export and files up to 10 minutes; Starter is $20 a month and Pro $40 a month, with WAV and FLAC and files up to 2 hours.

7. Splitter.ai: a simple free splitter
Splitter.ai is a web splitter built on Deezer’s Spleeter, with an API and a browser extension. Its free 5-stem Standard model runs in a slow shared queue, and uploads expire after an hour. A paid 2-stem PRO model has a one-day free trial; prices show in the dashboard. Spleeter is an older model, so expect more bleed than the newest models on MVSEP.

8. Fadr: free MP3 stems for remixing

When to stay with MVSEP
If you want to compare the newest models on the same song, run ensembles, or squeeze out the last bit of quality, MVSEP is the best place to do it. Its free tier allows 50 separations a day on files up to 10 minutes and 100 MB, one job at a time, and a free account removes the captcha and adds lossless output. Premium is prepaid credits, not a subscription: one credit per minute on standard models, more for ensembles, with files up to 100 minutes.

How to judge a split, whichever tool you use
I have spent 20 years mixing and mastering records and a decade teaching audio. These are the things that make the biggest difference.
- Vocal bleed in the instrumental. Listen through a chorus with stacked vocals. A ghostly, phasey vocal left behind is the most common failure.
- Hi-hats and cymbals. They should stay crisp. Weak separation turns them into a watery wash.
- Kick in the bass. Solo the bass. You should hear notes, not a thump on every beat.
- Reverb tails. A vocal’s tail should stay with the vocal, not float in the instrumental.
