Ultimate Vocal Remover Online: Can You Use UVR Without Installing It?

What Ultimate Vocal Remover is

Ultimate Vocal Remover (UVR) is a free desktop application for separating vocals and instruments from finished songs. The GUI is developed in the open on GitHub under Anjok07/ultimatevocalremovergui, and its code is MIT licensed, so anyone can use and modify it. The project asks that third parties who use its models credit UVR and its developers. According to the repository, UVR’s core developers trained the models bundled with it, apart from the Demucs v3 and v4 4-stem models.

The official website, ultimatevocalremover.com, links its download button straight to the GitHub releases page. That is the safe place to get it.

Platforms and versions

• Windows: Windows 10 and later, with a full installer.
• macOS: Big Sur and later, with separate downloads for Apple silicon (M1 and later) and Intel Macs.
• Linux: install instructions for Debian and Arch-based systems, run from source.

The latest release on the GitHub releases page is v5.6, published on 26 September 2023. It added full Demucs v1 to v4 compatibility and MDX23C support. It is still the newest release listed there.

What hardware UVR needs

UVR does the heavy lifting on your own machine, so the computer you own decides how pleasant it is to use.

• Nvidia GPU: the project lists an Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB as the minimum for GPU conversions and recommends 8GB or more of VRAM. This is where UVR is fastest.
• Apple silicon: GPU acceleration on M1 and later Macs covers Demucs v4 and all MDX-Net models.
• AMD GPU: support is limited, with a separate working branch for AMD users.
• CPU only: it works, just slowly. Larger models and ensembles on a CPU can take many times the length of the song.

64-bit systems only. If you hit memory errors, the project suggests lowering the Segment or Window size settings.

Models and ensemble mode

UVR is less a single separator than a front end for several families of models, each downloadable from its built-in Download Center:

• MDX-Net and MDX23C: mostly vocal and instrumental models, popular for clean acapellas.
• VR Architecture: UVR’s original model family, still included alongside the newer ones.
• Demucs v3 and v4: 4-stem models that split vocals, drums, bass and other.

Ensemble mode runs the same song through several models and combines the results, which can squeeze out the last few percent of quality on a difficult mix. It is a big part of why experienced users love UVR, and also why it rewards a fast GPU: every extra model is another full pass.

Why there is no official UVR web version

Neither the UVR repository nor ultimatevocalremover.com lists an official browser edition of the desktop app. That makes sense for a free project. Running separation models for the public means paying for GPU servers for every song, and UVR’s model is the opposite: you bring the hardware, it costs nothing. The upside is no limits and full privacy, since your files never leave your computer.

Where UVR-family models run online

UVR Online (X-Minus)

X-Minus runs an online vocal remover at x-minus.pro that presents itself as Ultimate Vocal Remover Online, and its Patreon is titled UVR Online (X-MINUS team). aufr33, one of UVR’s developers, describes himself on GitHub as working on both the UVR GUI and uvronline.app. It is the closest thing to “UVR in a browser”: vocal and instrumental separation with a choice of models, a free tier with limits and a Premium subscription that unlocks more models, longer files and lossless downloads. Exact free limits and prices are set on its own site and change, so check there.

MVSEP

MVSEP is a separate web service that exposes more than 100 separation models, including Demucs, MDX23C and newer Roformer models, several of which are also used by UVR users. Free use allows 50 separations a day on files up to 10 minutes and 100 MB, with MP3 output and a low-priority queue. Premium is credit based and adds lossless output, bigger files and ensembles. The interface is plain and assumes you know which model you want.

Google Colab notebooks

Community-made notebooks on GitHub run UVR code on Google Colab, using Google’s cloud GPUs. They work, but they are unofficial, depend on Colab’s free GPU availability and involve running code cells rather than clicking a button.

A caution about “UVR online” sites

Search for UVR online and you will find plenty of sites using the Ultimate Vocal Remover name or UVR5 in their domain. Some are wrappers around open models, some are ad-heavy converters, and some push a download. None of them is the UVR project. Before you upload a song or install anything, check who runs the site, never run an installer that is not from the official GitHub releases page, and be wary of any site asking for payment to “unlock UVR”, which is free.

When UVR is the better choice

Be clear about what UVR does best. If you have a Windows PC with a decent Nvidia card or an Apple silicon Mac, UVR is hard to beat:

• Free and unlimited. Split a hundred songs a day and it costs you electricity.
• Model choice. Pick the model for the job, compare results and run ensembles.
• Offline and private. Nothing is uploaded, and it works with no internet connection.
• Tweakable settings. Segment and window sizes and other options let you trade speed for quality on your own hardware.

For producers who want the cleanest possible acapella and do not mind tweaking settings, UVR earns its reputation.

When a browser tool is the better choice
