Stem Splitter vs Vocal Remover: What’s the Difference?

Vocal remover, stem splitter, instrument splitter, audio separator: the names blur together, but they all describe the same technology set to a different number of stems. Pick the right count and you get exactly the parts you need.

Short answer: a vocal remover is a 2-stem split (vocals and instrumental). A stem splitter separates the instrumental too, usually into 4 stems (vocals, drums, bass, other) or 6 stems (adding guitar and piano). Use 2 stems for karaoke and acapellas, 4 for drumless or bassless tracks, and 6 when you need guitar or piano on its own.

Same technology, different number of stems

A stem is one group of sounds from a song, such as all the drums or all the vocals. AI separation listens to a finished mix and predicts which sound belongs to which group. A vocal remover asks one question: is this the voice or not? A stem splitter asks several: is this voice, drums, bass, guitar, piano, or something else? So every vocal remover is really a stem splitter set to two stems, and terms like instrument splitter, stem remover and audio separator are describing the same thing.

The practical difference is what you can do with the result. Two stems let you keep or drop the vocal. Four or six stems let you drop, solo or rebalance individual instruments.

2-stem vs 4-stem vs 6-stem

2 stems: vocals and instrumental

The classic vocal remover. You get the lead and backing vocals on one track and everything else on the other. It is the fastest split and the cleanest route to a karaoke track, a backing track for singers, or an acapella for a remix.

4 stems: vocals, drums, bass, other

The instrumental is broken into drums, bass and a catch-all other stem. This is the standard set most tools and DAWs offer, and it covers drummers and bassists who want to play along with their own part removed.

6 stems: vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano, other

Guitar and piano come out of the other stem onto their own tracks. That matters for guitarists, keyboard players and anyone transcribing a part, because in a 4-stem split those instruments are mixed together with everything else.

What lands in “other”

The other stem holds whatever the model does not give its own track. In a 4-stem split that is usually guitars, piano and keys, synths, strings, horns, pads and effects returns. In a 6-stem split, guitar and piano are pulled out, so other is left with synths, strings, horns, organ, pads and ambience.

From the mixing chair: sounds that share a range with a named stem can split between the two. A distorted synth bass may land partly in bass, and a strummed acoustic may leave a little in other. Solo each stem before you commit, and use the level faders to rebalance rather than muting outright if a part sounds thin.

Is more stems always better?

No. More stems means more control, not a better instrumental. If all you want is the song without the singer, a 2-stem split is the simplest result: every instrument stays together in one track, exactly as it was balanced in the original mix, with no need to recombine anything. Splitting into 4 or 6 stems and muting only the vocal gets you to the same place with extra steps. The extra stems earn their keep when you want to change the balance between instruments, take out a second part, or hear one instrument clearly. Start with the job, then pick the count, and treat the stem count as a tool choice rather than a quality setting.

A simple rule: choose the smallest split that separates the part you care about. If your instrument has a named stem at 4, a 4-stem split is enough. If it would be buried in other, go to 6.
