Getting the cleanest instrumental from an MP3
Bitrate matters more than people expect. A 320 kbps MP3 separates almost as well as a WAV. A 128 kbps rip, or a file converted several times, carries compression artefacts that end up smeared across both stems as a faint watery hiss. If you have a better copy, use it.
Know what "vocals" means. The vocal stem takes the lead and most harmonies. Heavily processed backing vocals, vocal chops and vocoded parts sometimes stay with the instrumental, because to the separator they behave like synths. Solo the vocal stem to check.
Choose the export for the job. MP3 is fine for a phone playlist or a karaoke night. If the instrumental is going into a DAW, a video edit or a remix, choose WAV (Pro) so you are not stacking a second round of MP3 compression on the first. Old mono and heavily reverberant recordings leave some reverb tail in the instrumental; harmless for karaoke, worth pulling the "other" stem down slightly for a remix.
